Backyard Koi Ponds and Construction
A thoughtfully designed koi pond is more than a water feature—it is the centerpiece of an exceptional outdoor living environment. The gentle movement of water, the graceful presence of vibrant koi, and the artistry of natural stone create an atmosphere of quiet luxury that transforms an ordinary landscape into a private sanctuary. For discerning homeowners, a custom koi pond is an investment in beauty, wellness, and the everyday enjoyment of home.
Beyond its striking aesthetic appeal, a professionally designed koi pond offers meaningful lifestyle benefits. The soothing sound of flowing water promotes relaxation, while the tranquil setting encourages moments of reflection and connection with nature. Studies have shown that spending time near water can help reduce stress and support overall well-being, making a koi pond not only a beautiful addition to your property but also an enduring source of peace and restoration.
A custom koi pond is more than an enhancement to your landscape—it is a timeless expression of craftsmanship, elegance, and refined outdoor living.

Creating a balanced Koi Pond
Whether you're envisioning a serene garden retreat or a statement feature that complements your estate, understanding the design and construction process is the first step. From site planning and premium materials to filtration systems and aquatic landscaping, every detail contributes to creating a pond that is both visually stunning and engineered for lasting performance.
Protecting your Koi and your Investment
Whether you're spending a few dollars on a gold fish or several hundred on a premium Koi, as pond/fish owners we typically form an attachment to our underwater friends. There are a few ways we can keep them healthy and happy and ensure the pond lasts as long as the fish that live in it. (That said, the oldest living koi in captivity lived to over 100 years.)
A properly set up pond should provide the following:
Plenty of room: about 10 gallons to every ½-1” of fish
Proper filtration and water movement: Moving water creates oxygen which fish need. As water is being moved/turned over, it should also be filtered by removing fish waste and dead or decaying plant material like leaves. Part of the filtration process is both mechanical like water passing through a filter pad, and biological in that those filter pads will have beneficial bacteria living in them that eats nutrients as they pass through, therefore depriving algae of a food source
A bottom drain: Nobody, including fish benefit from swimming in their own waste. A bottom drain immediately removes waste and harmful bacteria from the pond before it has a chance to colonize or change the chemistry in the water in a way that's harmful to the fish
Here are Four key steps your koi pond builder will take:
Step 1: The Plan. The first step is to determine how many fish you'd like to keep. This will determine the minimum size of the pond required. Should space be limited, you can also increase the amount of filtration to offset a smaller pond.
Step 2: The Layout. Once the pond size has been determined, we layout where the pond and its various elements will go. These include waterfalls, fish caves, skimmers, external filters and lights. This step is critical because we want the elements to line up in a way that makes sense. For example. You'd want the waterfall to be facing a direction where it is most visible, You don't want the lights placed in a way that they're going to shine in your face when your at the pond, and you want any equipment to not be visible so that the pond looks like its completely natural.
Step 3: Installation. Our crew begins excavating for pond, and re-routs and tests any sprinkler or utility lines that are encountered. We ensure that once dug, anything sharp like tree roots, concrete, or rock that could damage the liner are removed. We install the liner on top of a protective fabric underlayment, and once the liner is in, we clad it with natural boulders to protect the line and also give it the look of a completely natural pond.
Step 4: Start Up. Once the pond is up and running, Lunaquatic tests all equipment, and ensures that everything is operating properly. At this point we walk you through how everything in the system works. We've found that most people want choose/pick out their own koi. We can point you to vendors our clients like and who they've had success with. We are available to be on hand to transport, and acclimate the fish to their new home.
